For me the standout track is the flawless Smother, like most songs on the album it’s incredibly simplistic and bare-boned but get’s inside your head enough to engage and make an impact. It’s more of a soundtrack for feeling lost and lonely in the corner of a club and just wanting to go home.

It’s an extremely melancholic full length that won’t do any wonders for you if you’re looking for a Darwin Deez kind of album that’ll get you dancing on your feet. This gives off the overwhelming sense that the band are struggling to pull themselves out of the habits of giving up on anything and everything. Tomorrow starts out as an incredibly optimistic song by Daughter’s standards before falling back into hopelessness again. However this record is a full collection of previously unheard really stunning songs that conjure up some incredibly emotive imagery. A lot of bands fail at this point and tend not to put out a full album of decent new material because they’ve burnt it all up at the EP stage. I was extremely optimistic for this record in the run up to it’s release after hearing incredible music from Daughter on both of their brilliant EP’s.

The actual song structures are a complete consolation to this though and always feature beautifully crafted guitar melodies that reverberate very clean and crisp. Daughter’s songs are typically very miserable and quite casually revolve themselves around very morbid subjects and very dark content lyrically.

This becomes something you can really relate to and can compare to events occurring in your own life like the suffering from love loss, violence, addiction etc. I think one of the reasons her songwriting is so successful is because it acts in the same way Alex Turner’s lyricism does as it is heavily based around misery’s and let down’s in everyday life. The real talent of Elena Tonra shines throughout this release showcasing the incredible wordsmith that she is and just how many times over she can write incredibly emotive songs that really get inside your head.
